Before 1947, African Americans were not allowed to play Major League Baseball. Instead, they were subject to play in what was known as the Minor Leagues. The reason why African Americans weren’t allowed to play in the Major Leagues is because of their race.

Today, African Americans are allowed to play in the Major Leagues.

When African Americans first started playing in the Major Leagues many people were against it because they still had the mindset that African Americans shouldn’t be allowed to play with the whites. This event was a social shock to the public.

Adam Jones is an African American Major League Baseball player. He plays for the Baltimore Orioles. During a game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Monday night, Jones received some racist slurs from a Boston Red Sox fan. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Jones stated that “A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me [and] I was called the N-word a handful of times.”

After the game had ended Red Sox officials confirmed that a fan had threw a bag of peanuts at Jones.

Later on, Jones stated that this wasn’t the first time he had received racial slurs at Fenway Park. According to Nightengale, “Monday night’s incidents represented one of the worst experiences of his  MLB career.”

After this incident occurred, the mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh, stated to ESPN that “This is unacceptable and not who we are as a city.”

Even after 70 years of African Americans being allowed to play baseball, fans still don’t agree with the idea of them playing in the Major Leagues.
