On Nov. 13, 2020, Kim Ng was hired as the new General Manager of the Miami Marlins MLB team, which makes her the first female GM in the top 5 American sports leagues. This won’t be her first managerial experience though. She’s been around the MLB for the last 30 years. Her career started out with the Chicago White Sox in 1990. After that, she was the assistant general manager for the New York Yankees for three seasons (1998-2001), in which she helped to lead them to three world series (the only three of her career.) She then worked in the front office of the LA Dodgers for 9 seasons (2002-2011), and for the last nine years she has been part of the MLB as a senior vice-president.

The chief executive of the Marlins (Derek Jeter), who played for Kim Ng when she was the assistant manager of the New York Yankees, hired Kim Ng as a part of his rebuilding process of the marlins that started 3 years ago. Jeter believes that having Kim Ng as the GM will bring the championship quality of baseball back to the Marlins. In a statement with the press Jeter said, “We look forward to Kim bringing a wealth of knowledge and championship-level experience to the Miami Marlins…Her leadership of our baseball operations team will play a major role on our path toward sustained success.”

In the same interview Jeter also said that he believed that she is good for the “youth baseball and softball initiatives” and that she “will enhance our efforts to grow the game among our local youth.”
